Little Lights Outreach Update

This is a guest post by one of our Outreach volunteers, Adele
Last Saturday, fourteen Frontline Arlington members – with PB&J sandwiches and hundreds of homemade cookies in tow – hung out with the kids at Little Lights Urban Ministries Saturday Drop-In Program (UrbanDiP) in Southeast D.C. This weekly program gives kindergarteners through 5th graders at the Potomac Gardens Housing Units a chance to play Wii, eat lunch and work on a craft activity. And for Frontline Arlington’s first volunteer session at UrbanDIP, the activity scheduled was cookie decorating, with frosting and sprinkles in all the colors of the rainbow.
The night before the event, Frontliners met at outreach leader Serena Carter’s apartment to share a meal, assemble bagged lunches and to bake a multitude of cookies and make frosting – from scratch! We cut out tons of sugar cookies in assorted animal shapes, with the cookies growing more creative as the night wore on (Olympic Ring-shaped cookies, anyone?). It was a great time of Christian fellowship, as the volunteers group met for the first time and shared a lot of laughs during the cookie baking process.
The cookies were all part of our goal to serve the children at UrbanDIP and to serve God by bringing the best that we possibly could, the “firstfruits of our crops” [Proverbs 3:9]. And our efforts didn’t go unnoticed– one boy grabbed a bowl of cookies, took a whiff and said “These are homemade cookies, aren’t they?”
All of us put so much love and effort into the cookies, and the kids could tell. We want our ministry at Little Lights to reflect Paul’s words in Acts 20:35: “In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
Frontline Arlington will be serving at UrbanDIP on March 13, April 17, May 15, June 5, July 24. Please pray for us as we seek to develop relationships with the kids at Little Lights and as we help share the love of Christ.
